(The title of this post, and my asking the site owners to let me be a poster here, is inspired (in a roundabout way) by this conversation over at John & Belle's.
According to Wikipædia, "10 Apples" is not, as I had vaguely thought, one of Seuss' earlier works, but right in the middle of his career; nor is it such an overlooked gem, ranking as it does #20 among Seuss' most popular books. I still maintain that it is way better than e.g. "Mr. Brown Can Moo!" which is #15 and #17, or lame old "Hop on Pop" at #4.)
